BRIEF
With the NHS facing unprecedented strain on resources, paediatric departments often see a high volume of non-emergency visits from anxious parents. The brief was to identify a systemic world issue and develop a solution. My research focused on the "post-discharge" gap, the period when parents bring a recovering baby home and feel unsupported. The goal was to create a non-invasive medical device that could monitor infant vitals and provide real-time reassurance or direct medical escalation when necessary.
WHAT I DID
I developed a "Smart Pacifier" prototype integrated with biosensors to monitor oxygen saturation, heart rate, and temperature. I designed an accompanying mobile application that translates complex medical data into easy-to-read "wellness status" updates for parents. To address the issue of hospital over-crowding, I implemented a triage feature: the app uses an algorithm to determine if vitals are within a safe range, only triggering an automated alert to the family's chosen doctor if a serious anomaly is detected.
RESULT
The final outcome was a comprehensive multi-stage design package. It began with an in-depth research report on NHS resource strain, followed by a functional product prototype. I documented the entire journey in a detailed process book, showcasing every iteration from initial concept to final execution. To conclude, I produced a high-impact informational poster; this utilized advanced graphic design skills to distill complex medical data and product mechanics into a single, cohesive page, ensuring the project's purpose and functionality were immediately clear to any viewer.
