BRIEF

The brief challenged us to select any existing commercial product and completely redesign it from the ground up, focusing on form, material, and user interaction. I chose to redesign standard home lighting, aiming to replace static, mechanical lamps with an experiential piece. The goal was to capture the natural essence and movement of the sun, creating an "object of desire" that relies on simple, physical movement rather than digital dials to intuitively alter a room's mood and ambiance.

WHAT I DID

As an individual project, I designed and developed LE SOLEIL, a sculptural lamp featuring an illuminating sphere that pivots atop a solid copper cylindrical base. To control the light, I engineered an integrated system where a circular wood disc sits on top of the sphere, allowing the user to physically tilt and pivot the component to dynamically shield, dim, or open up the light beam. I compiled my complete design journey into an extensive process book tracking the project from initial ideation sketches to the final material specification.

RESULT

To bring the concept to life, I manufactured a functional, working mechanism prototype to demonstrate the physical articulation and shielding capability of the design elements. I concluded the project by producing a high impact presentation poster, using clean product rendering and thoughtful layout design to showcase the object's premium materials, interactive movement, and atmospheric lighting options.
